Hailed for her “extraordinary virtuosity” (CHIMEI Arts Award), as well as for her “sublime playing” and “radiant tone” (Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Corigliano), Yu-Ting is an artist of uncommon musical versatility.

Taiwanese clarinetist Dr. Yu-Ting Cheng has earned recognition as a solo artist by winning numerous top prizes in her career, including the Hsing-Tien Kong Young Artist Award, the 2019 Stony Brook Concerto Competition, the 32nd CHIMEI Arts Award, the 5th North International Music Competition, the American Prize National Competitions in Instrumental Performance and the Ernst Bacon Award of American Music 2021.

Additionally, Yu-Ting is the recipient of the Valeri Canady Foundation Scholarship in clarinet performance 2015 and the Outstanding Alumni Award of Taiwan Chapter Society of Peabody Conservatory Alumni 2017. Awarded fellowships by the highly reputable Norfolk New Music Workshop 2019 and LUCERNE Festival Academy 2020 has established her as a prominent voice for contemporary music in the clarinet world. She is also the artist-in-residence of 2020 “Stars of Tiding” O- Bank Education Foundation.

She performs frequently across the US, Europe and Asia. Deeply committed to sharing her passion through music, she also engages students and community audiences through frequent school and outreach concerts, lecture recitals and master classes. She has held numerous recitals and concerts in Taiwan at National Taiwan Concert Hall and Weiwuying National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts. Recent highlights include Webern Symphony and Boulez Polyphonie X with Lucerne Contemporary Orchestra at Berlin Philharmonie and Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre, World premieres for chamber orchestra with Orchestra of St. Luke's with Maestro Tito Muñoz, The Chinese Now Music Festival Finale Concert with the Orchestra of new Asia Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, off-Broadway opera "Watch Night", Best of Broadway with conductor Todd Ellison and Orchestra Lumos, Schubert Die Verschworenen with Maestro Phillip Nuzzo and Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra at Wien Musikverein, Corigliano Clarinet Concerto with Maestro Michael Morgan and Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra broadcasted by Clarinet Corner on Troy Public Radio, Butterfly Lovers Clarinet Concerto (World premiere) with conductor Austin Philemon and BCO.

As a composer, her recent composition "Static Chatter- for solo clarinet, electronics and video" was selected by 2024 NYCEMF. Her “Haya- for Solo Clarinet and Electronics” was selected by 2016 EMMF and 2018 NYCEMF. She was invited to be the presenter of TEDx Talk to perform and share her composition process of her piece “Haya”. Her commissioned piece “Meditation- for Solo Violin, Pre-recorded Piano and Electronics” by Taiwan Chapter Society of Peabody Alumni had its world premiere at the National Concert Hall in Taipei. 

A native of Taipei, Taiwan, Yu-Ting received two master’s degrees from Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University and Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Steven E. Barta and David Krakauer.  She also holds a doctoral degree from Stony Brook University under the guidance of Alan R. Kay. She is currently the B-flat/ Bass clarinetist with the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra.
